Time used: 3 months
Original price: £430
Overall verdict: 5 stars, no doubt!
I have been a big fan of GPS for years - the concept of always knowing where you are is very reassuring, whether you are stuck in traffic on the M6 or exploring the depths of Europe for the first time. Add to that the capabilities of the new GPS systems to tell you how to get to where you want to be as well and I can't imagine taking on any kind of serious journey without this little box on the dashboard!
This is the top of the range GPS for TomTom, which means it comes with all of the extras you could wish for - including a traffic report receiver.
Just plug this extra cable into the unit and give it a few minutes to collect the radio traffic reports - then your route will be recalculated to make sure you are on the best possible roads. It also updates your arrival time, so you can call ahead (using the built in bluetooth hands-free facility, of course) to let everyone know if you will be late!
Route planning is fast, very fast - much faster than any of the top-of-the range built in GPS systems I have used. Even when you miss your turn, you barely get past the end of the road before a new route is being displayed and instructions (very calmly) given to get you back on track.
There are a lot of other features in this unit (such as voice recognition for address entry, MP3 player, ability to play through your car stereo system, remote control, etc) - take a look here for the full spec, but now that these units are available for almost 1/2 the price they were just 3 months ago - if you're travelling without one, you're making your journey far too difficult!
